Prince William clocked in for his first shift as an air ambulance pilot onMonday, nervous but excitedabout his new job.
The second-in-line to Britain's throne will face emergencies ranging fromtraffic accidents to heartattacks in his role working for East Anglian AirAmbulance. William will juggle his royal dutieswith nine-and-a-half hour shiftsin the first few months, as part of a rotation where hewill work four days andthen have four days off. He'll work less in the future toaccommodate royaltasks.
"I feel doing a job like this really helps me to be grounded and that's thecore of what I'm trying tobecome," he said. "I'm trying to be a good guy, to dowhat I can and trying to be a decentindividual."
William will also juggle both jobs with fatherhood. He took unpaid leave inApril after he wrapped uphis first phase of training, and has returned followingthe birth of Princess Charlotte, whom hedescribed as "a little joy fromheaven."
"At the same time, there is a lot of responsibility, especially when Georgeis around -- he's been alittle monkey," he said. "It's no more difficult thanwhat everyone else has to do."
Last week, William and Duchess Kate shared official photos from Charlotte'srecent christening.
William and his crewmates began work right way, responding to a firstemergency call at 9:20 a.m. (0820 GMT, 4:20 a.m. ET). The charity plans torelease details of the incident later Monday.
The prince, who will donate his salary to charity, has previously been aRoyal Air Force search-and-rescue pilot based on an island off Wales.
